Clip Studio Paint EX/PRO/DEBUT Ver.1.8.8 (Windows/macOS/iPad) has been released. This update is a bug fix to address an issue where materials would not be pasted to the correct location when dragged and dropped on the canvas. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this bug.

Version 1.8.6 was released on February 28, but it came to our attention that the new pen pressure wizard was appearing on start-up for people who did not need it.
Please follow these instructions to revert to the default pen pressure settings.
you will be able to revert to previous pen pressure settings if you have backed up your app settings with the Clip Studio cloud. If you have not backed up your settings, it is not possible to automatically revert the settings. Please see here for instructions on how to revert to settings backed up on the cloud.

On February 28, we released Clip Studio Paint Ver. 1.8.6 (Windows/macOS/iPad). It has come to our attention that the new pen pressure wizard was appearing for users who do not need to adjust pen pressure settings. We have now released Ver. 1.8.7 (Windows/macOS/iPad) with adjustments to avoid unintentionally changing pen pressure settings.

We have added twelve new brushes to achieve more realistic and traditional finishes.


  1. New sub tools and sub tool groups have been added to the [Brush] tool.
    - The [Real watercolor] Group has been added, including six new sub tools.
    - The term [Oil paint] group has been changed to [Thick paint]. If you are updating from a previous version, the group name will not change.
    - Five sub tools have also been added to the [Thick Paint] group: [Gouache], [Dry Gouache], [Thin Gouache], [Pointillism], and [Gouache blender]. If you are updating from a previous version, these will be added to the existing [Oil paint] group.
    - The [Soothing watercolor] and [Running color on fiber] sub tools have been moved from the [Blend] tool to the [Brush] tool > [Watercolor] group. If you are updating from a previous version, these will not be moved.
  2. The [Kneaded eraser] sub tool has been added to the [Eraser] tool.

(iPad) We have improved file management for sharing multi-page works through the cloud.


  1. (iPad) We have improved file management for sharing multi-page works through the cloud. You can use the following operations to transfer your files to cloud services such as Dropbox and iCloud Drive through the iOS “Files” app.
    - You can drag and drop files saved to Clip Studio Paint from the [File operation/Share] dialog box to the “Files” app.
    - You can also import multi-page documents saved to Dropbox and iCloud Drive by importing them from the “Files” app.
    - 3D data composed of multiple files such as FBX format and LWS format can now be imported by folder instead of file by file.
    - You can now import sub tools by dragging and dropping them onto the [Sub tool] palette.
  2. (iPad) You can drag and drop images from iOS “Safari” and “Photos” apps to import them to Clip Studio Paint.
  3. (iPad) The checkboxes have been made larger when the [File operation/Share] dialog box is set to [Collection] view mode.
  4. (iPad) You can now use hotkeys to select multiple files in the [File operation/Share] dialog box.
  5. (iPad) You can now select multiple files simply by tapping the checkboxes in the [File operation/Share] dialog box.

The technology preview feature*1, Pose Scanner, has been added.


  1. Technology preview features have been added to the [Tool Property] when selecting a 3D drawing figure or 3D character material. The Pose Scanner feature estimates a pose from a photo of a human, then applies the pose to 3D characters and 3D drawing figures.

You can now show vector paths.EX PRO

  1. [Show vector paths] has been added to the [View] menu. You can choose from the following options: [Show all vector paths on vector layers], [Show vector paths on selected layers], [Show control points at beginning and end], and [Show all control points].
  2. The option [Vector path opacity] has been added to the [Preferences] dialog box > [Layer/Frame].

Improvements (DEBUT/PRO/EX)

  1. [Use 3D pose material] has been added to the [Tool Property] when selecting a 3D drawing figure or 3D character material. This applies a pose to a 3D drawing figure or 3D character.
  2. [Use 3D pose material] has been added to the Object Launcher when selecting a 3D drawing figure or 3D character material. This applies a pose to a 3D drawing figure or 3D character.
  3. (Windows) [Input frequency] has been added to [Tablet Settings] under [Preferences].
  4. (Windows) Slightly reduced line jitter when drawing on tablet computers.

Improvements (PRO/EX)

  1. In the [Tool Property] palette when selecting a frame with the [Object] sub tool, the option [Move with another frame border] has been renamed to [Keep gutters aligned], and the options have been changed to [All], [Horizontal & adjacent], and [None]. In addition to the previous options, there is a new option to move the height of frame rows when adjusting the vertical gutters.
  2. When selecting a gradient layer with the [Object] sub tool and editing the gradient in the [Tool Property] > [Fill] > [Advanced Settings] > [Edit gradient] dialog box, a preview of the gradient will be shown on the canvas.
  3. The options [Export draft] and [Export frames] have been added to the [File] menu > [Export animation] > [Image sequence] dialog box. You now have the option to export draft layers and each frame when exporting as an image sequence.
  4. The option [Drawing area] has been added to the [File] menu > [Export animation] > [Image sequence] dialog box. This will export the entire canvas or a specified area.
  5. The option [Anti-aliasing on border effect] has been added to the [Layer Property] palette. You can choose whether or not to turn on anti-aliasing when [Border effect] is turned on.

Improvements (EX)

  1. The option [Export layers not in animation folders] has been added to the [File] > [Export animation] > [Export animation cels] dialog box. This flattens and exports all layers, including those not inside animation folders.
  2. File name settings have been improved in the [File] menu > [Export animation] > [Export animation cels] dialog box.
    - Under [File name], there is now an option to include the animation folder name in the file name.
    - [File prefix] has been added. This allows you to configure a prefix to be added to the beginning of the file names.

Changes of specification (DEBUT/PRO/EX)

  1. The stroke preview in the [Sub Tool] palette and [Tool Property] palette has been changed. You can now switch between tools more quickly.
  2. The [Pen Pressure Settings] dialog box from the [File] menu ([CLIP STUDIO PAINT] menu for macOS/iPad) has been changed.
  3. When starting Clip Studio Paint for the first time (or if you have not set up pen pressure), a pen pressure adjustment wizard will appear upon starting up.
  4. When using [Edit] menu > [Colorize (Technology preview)] on a line art layer in an animation folder or a folder with active keyframes, the colorization layer will be created above the folder. Layers in folders within animation folders will be treated as normal.
  5. When you drag and drop an image onto the [Layer] palette, the image will be inserted to the location indicated with a red line, not on the currently selected layer.
  6. In the [Sub Tool Property] palette, the term [Mix ground color] has been changed to [Color mixing].
  7. In the [Sub Tool Property] palette for the [Fill] sub tools, the term [Stop filling at center line of vector] has been changed to [Fill up to vector path].
  8. Other minor revisions to terms and tool explanations.

Changes of specification (PRO/EX)

  1. Data exported with [File] menu > [Corner store print] will not be synced to the cloud.
  2. When deleting a tool set to a shortcut in the [Modifier Key Settings] dialog box > [Change tool temporarily], the tool will be deleted from shortcuts as well. You will no longer be able to switch to the deleted tool with shortcut keys or buttons.
  3. We have changed the way adjacent frames move when adjusting frames with the [Object] sub tool. ・ When the horizontal borders are not even heights and the gutter width is wide, the frames will no longer move in alignment.
  4. When transforming frames with the [Object] sub tool, frames will move in alignment based on the settings in [Preferences] > [Layer/Frame] > [Frame Border]. If the values in [Frame Border] are high, the frames will move in alignment even when the gutters are wide.
  5. When using the [Layer] menu > [Change Selected Layer] > [Layer Above]/[Layer Below] in files with active timelines, the frame in the [Timeline] palette will also change to indicate the new selected layer.
  6. When using auto actions to switch layers in files with active timelines, the frame in the [Timeline] palette will also change to indicate the new selected layer.
  7. You can now sync files containing file object layers to the Clip Studio Cloud. However, the referenced file object file cannot be synced.

Changes of specification (EX)

  1. In the [File] menu > [Export animation] > [Export animation cels] dialog box, the term [Export drafts] has been changed to [Export drafts within animation cels].
  2. Data exported with [File] menu > [Export multiple pages] > [Export fanzine printing data]/[Export in Kindle format]/[Export EPUB data] will not be synced to the cloud.

[iPad]

  1. A pop-up will now appear when opening Clip Studio Paint to let you know the latest news.
  2. The [News/Highlights] section has been added to Clip Studio. Click this to see the latest news about Clip Studio Paint in your browser.
