CLIP STUDIO PAINT release notes

Clip Studio Paint Fall Update (Version 1.9.4) (Sept. 26, 2019)

Note: Features marked withEX or PRO can only be used in EX or PRO.

* Some bugs have been confirmed when using Clip Studio Paint Ver.1.9.3 or earlier with macOS Catalina (10.15) scheduled to be released in the near future. If you plan to update your macOS, please update Clip Studio Paint to Ver.1.9.4.
Note: The iPad version will be available on the AppStore as soon as the review is complete.

Main updates in Version 1.9.4

Improved Page Management Tools (EX)

  1. You will be able to drag and drop pages between Page Manager windows to copy pages to other page management folders.
  2. The following operations will be possible from the Story menu > Import Page command.

・ Import multiple pages at once
・ Select page management files (extension: .cmc)

New Settings For Stabilization by Speed (EX/PRO/DEBUT)

A new option has been added to the existing Adjust by speed setting. You can now choose to adjust the stabilization level to increase when drawing slowly to avoid small jitters. This setting can be adjusted in Sub Tool Detail > Correction.

(macOS) Support for Sidecar (EX/PRO/DEBUT)

Version 1.9.4 will support the new Sidecar feature for macOS 10.15 Catalina to be released by Apple in Oct. 2019. You will be able to connect your iPad to a Mac for drawing and painting in Clip Studio Paint. While using Sidecar, you’ll also be able to use the Clip Studio Tabmate.

  1. Extended desktop
    - Drag and drop the Canvas window to the iPad to draw with the Apple Pencil. Touch gestures can also be used. (However, you cannot use touch gestures for UI operations.) You’ll be able to view entire canvases and files on your Mac display. If you set the iPad as your main display, you can also use the Mac application on your iPad.
  2. Mirroring
    - Mirror Clip Studio Paint open on the Mac and draw on the iPad.

Note: Sidecar can be used with the latest iPad OS.
To use Sidecar, you need to sign in with the same Apple ID on iPad and Mac.
When using Sidecar, you can use a three-finger swipe to undo or redo.

New Artistic Filter (EX/PRO/DEBUT)

  1. The Artistic filter will be added to the Filter > Effect menu. You can create line art and painting-style effects from photographs and images.

Other Improvements and Changes

    We have also made some other function improvements, specification changes, and bug fixes based on feedback from Clip Studio Paint users.
  1. Improved quality of line tones with gradients. (EX/PRO only)
  2. (iPad) On iPad OS 13 and later, the Search for fonts not in this list option will be added to the font list in the Tool Property palette. Fonts installed on the iPad from the system font picker can be added to the font list. (EX/PRO only)
  3. (mac) Support for touch gestures (EX/PRO only)
    - You will be able to use touch gestures with the trackpad.
    - When using macOS 10.15 or later, you will be able to use touch gestures on the iPad using Sidecar.
  4. In the Layer menu > New Layer, the command Clip Studio Share > Foil layer has been added. This type of layer creates a foil effect when viewing the artwork in Clip Studio Share.
  5. Smart Smoothing will be released as a standard function.
  6. (Windows/macOS) The “Getting Started” tour will appear upon newly installing or updating the software. Once displayed, it will not appear again until the next update. You can view the “Getting Started” tour again from the Help menu.
    The new update will also include more than 50 other improvements and bug fixes.

What’s Coming to Clip Studio Share?

Enhanced 3D Reader and Effects

Clip Studio Share will be updated with better features for sharing and reading stories in the 3D viewer, including more effects to view artwork.

Improved Reading Experience

We will update the viewer used for sharing on social media such as Twitter to offer a better reading experience and make it easier to share your stories and comics. Improvements and changes will continue in addition to the above content.

Clip Studio Paint Version 1.9.4 includes the following new features and improvements from previous versions.

Improvements (DEBUT/PRO/EX)

  1. The Artistic filter has been added to the Filter menu > Effect. You can create line art and painting-style effects from photographs and images.
  2. We have updated the Adjust by speed stabilization option in the Tool Property palette of drawing tools. In addition to the previous option, there is a new setting to increase stabilization when drawing slowly. This will stabilize small shakes when drawing slowly.

Improvements (PRO/EX)

  1. We have improved the quality of line tones with gradients.
  2. (mac) We have added support for touch gestures.
    ・ The Touch gesture category has been added to Preferences. Here you can adjust the touch gesture settings.
    ・ You can use touch gestures on the trackpad.
    - When using macOS 10.15 or later, you can use touch gestures on the iPad using Sidecar.
  3. (iPad) If the application is closed while the Clip Studio window is open, some display settings such as the Manage works and Manage materials screens will be restored on the next launch.
  4. On iPad OS 13 and later, the Search for fonts not in this list option will be added to the font list in the Tool Property palette. Fonts installed on the iPad from the system font picker can be added to the font list.
  5. (iPad) We have updated the Wacom Stylus SDK to Version 2.2.1.

Improvements (EX)

  1. You can import multiple files at once from Story > Import page.
  2. You can select page management files (extension: .cmc) from the Story menu > Import page. When importing files with multiple pages, a dialog will pop up for you to indicate the page range to import.
  3. You can now drag and drop pages between Story windows to copy pages to other page management folders.
  4. You can now save all open pages when closing the Story Editor.
  5. When exporting printing data from Clip Studio SHARE by using the Submit from Clip Studio option, you can now split double-page spreads.
  6. In the Layer menu > New Layer, the command Clip Studio Share >Foil layer has been added. This type of layer creates a foil effect when viewing the artwork in Clip Studio Share.
  7. (iPad) You can now open zip files containing page management files. Share them from other apps such as the Files app or drag and drop them into Clip Studio Paint to open.

Feature Changes (DEBUT/PRO/EX)

  1. Edit > Smart Smoothing is now a standard function.

Feature Changes (PRO/EX)

  1. When transforming text, the transformation will better match the original height of the text.
  2. (iPad) The Clip Studio Paint pop-up edit box will no longer disappear after closing the virtual keyboard.
  3. (iPad) On iPadOS 13 and later, three-finger gestures will be disabled while editing text.
  4. (iPad) On iPadOS 13 and later, the font displayed in the Clip Studio Paint interface has changed.

Feature Changes (EX)

  1. When editing text with Wrap text at frame turned on in the Story Editor, the size of the text box will not change.
  2. When importing pages from Story > Import page, a pop-up message will appear if basic work settings such as the size or expression color are different to the current file.
  3. A message will appear if a blank page is automatically added after adding pages with Story > Import Page or Duplicate Page
  4. If copying a page in the Story window (by dragging and dropping while holding the Alt key) would impact the cover settings or double-page layout, then a blank page will be added.
  5. When dragging an unsaved page in the Story window while holding the Alt key, an error message will appear. The cursor will not display the “disabled” symbol.
  6. We have updated the viewer in File > Export multiple pages > 3D Preview for Binding. With the following settings, the edge pixels of the cover page will be stretched over the spine cover.
    When the Cover page layout is set to double-page spread and the Align crop mark option is turned off in View > Crop mark/Default border settings.
    When the Cover page layout is set to single pages.

Bug Fixes (DEBUT/PRO/EX)

  1. Fixed an issue where clicking or moving an image inside a selection area with the Move layer tool would cause the original image to remain.
  2. (mac) Fixed an issue on macOS 10.15 where connecting a Clip Studio Tabmate would cause Clip Studio Paint to freeze or force-close.
  3. (iPad) Fixed an issue on iPadOS 13 where Adobe Photoshop Big Documents could not be imported from the Files app.
